"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God...on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:16-18)
"Hades" (hell in the KJV) is the state of people after death. It means “unseen” or “grave”. The word "church" is the Greek word “ecclesia” and means “called out ones”. Christ Jesus is the first to die and be called out of death never to die again, the “rock” or foundation stone of our faith. And he has promised to return and resurrect mankind (call people out of death). So what the above verse says to me is that DEATH will not prevail for we will be CALLED OUT of death at the resurrection.
“If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also....For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout...and the dead in Christ will rise...Therefore comfort one another with these words” (John 14:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18)

Is Going To Church A Sin
“...the wages of sin is death...” (Romans 6:23a)
You and I, and everyone else, are sinners and that is why we die. No amount of bible study, church attendance, witnessing, walking the aisle, or baptisms will change that.
The cross of our Lord Jesus did not change that fact. The human race are still sinners and "the wages of sin" is still "death". All of the saints of bygone eras have passed away. It is the destiny of human beings - ALL of us - Christians, Muslims, Atheists, and everyone in between - even Christ Jesus himself died.
What followed the cross is the gospel, the good news which revealed God's plan for sinful humans after we die. For it was after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus that God revealed to Paul the good news of what follows death...
"As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive…" (1 Corinthians 15:22)
And after the cross and resurrection of Jesus, God revealed to Paul why a world of sinful people will be "made alive"...and what we are to do with this good news...
"God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them." (2 Corinthians 5:19)
"And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation...” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Our commission is not to save the world, but to deliver the message that it will be saved out of death because the world is now reconciled to God. After we are "made alive" God will no longer count our sins agains us. We will have paid the "wages of sin" and thereafter been saved by the grace of God as a "free gift".

Is going to church a sin?
So by all means, go to your favorite Church if you enjoy going, but it is not a sin to quit if those humans running it stop teaching the truth about God.
You should, in those circumstances, quit that church without quitting God.

The Church Is Not A Building

The church is not a building to attend or an organization to join. God Himself defined the Church as the “body" of Christ…

Members of the body of Christ (the church) are present anywhere that there are humans who have faith that 1) Jesus died for their sins, 2) was entombed, and that 3) God raised from the dead. When the New Testament was being written there were some throughout Galatia, some in Jerusalem, some in Ephesus, some in Corinth, some in Thessalonica, some in Colossi, some in Philippi, some in Rome, some at the lake, and some down by the river.
Today there are some in Sayre, some in Elk City, and some in other cities throughout globe. Some prefer to go to a church building on Sunday to be with friends, and others prefer to fish or play golf on Sunday with friends - and there is nothing wrong with any of that.
Todays tax exempt church organizations were built by humans, not God, and you find them in almost all cities in the US and around the world. How will Jesus view our "solemn assemblies" when he returns.
"When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get." (Matthew 6:2)

How will Jesus view our "solemn assemblies" when he returns.
Church buildings may serve a purpose for those people who need the fellowship of other humans for moral and spiritual support; and, I suppose it is not a sin to go there to meet that need. But IT IS SINFUL to suggest that members of the body of Christ who do not attend a local church building and support its programs are disobedient to God.
Members of the body of Christ, the Church, are to work hard to "correctly explain the word of truth".
"Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)
And they are to help those in need without telling everyone about it...
What we do and what we teach will be "manifested in front of the Dais of Christ", the raised platform before the "Great White Throne". There each of us will be judged according to our acts,
"For all of us must be manifested in front of the Dais of Christ, that each should be requited for that which he puts into practice through the body, whether good or bad." (2 Corinthians 5:10 CLV)
"And I perceived a Great White Throne, and Him Who is sitting upon it, from Whose face earth and heaven fled, and no place was found for them." And I perceived the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne. And the scrolls were opened. And another scroll was opened which is the scroll of life. And the dead were judged by that which is written in the scrolls in accord with their acts." (Revelation 20:11-12 CLV)

Those acts include what is taught in the local solemn assemblies! The bad stuff will be burnt up - I am glad.
"For other foundation can no one lay beside that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Now if anyone is building on this foundation gold and silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, each one's work will become apparent, for the day will make it evident, for it is being revealed by fire. And the fire, it will be testing each one's work - what kind it is." If anyone's work will be remaining which he builds on it, he will get wages. If anyone's work shall be burned up, he will forfeit it, yet he shall be saved, yet thus, as through fire." Are you not aware that you are a temple of God and the spirit of God is making its home in you? If anyone is corrupting the temple of God, God will be corrupting him, for the temple of God is holy, which you are." Let no one be deluding himself. If anyone among you is presuming to be wise in this eon, let him become stupid, that he may be becoming wise, for the wisdom of this world is stupidity with God." (1 Corinthians 3:11-19)
The "temple of God" is not a building project - it is inside the members of the body of Christ, wherever you may find one.

It is mankind called out of a sinful life of the flesh and into a holy spiritual life. It exists today in the form of a promise revealed by God to Paul and believed only by a few in this age. It will not be manifested until the resurrection of the dead and the conclusion of the present evil age. There are two more ages revealed in Scripture it seems to me. And at the conclusion of these ages, ALL will have been “made alive” by being “born again” of the Spirit into the manifested New Creation of the “called out”…the Ecclesia (Church).
“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive…The last enemy that will be abolished is death…that God may be all in all.” (1 Corinthians 15:21-28)
Paul did not go places to “start” a church, or “grow” a church, or to “attend” the church. He went everywhere to tell ABOUT the church founded upon God’s promise in Christ Jesus. He used the term “called-out” to express the reality that anywhere he went there were those to be part of the Ecclesia. All mankind will be a part of it and all will eventually be born again into a new creation in Christ. Christ is the Rock, the Cornerstone and the Firstfruits of that collective body of mankind. All people are to die and be buried just like Christ, and then raised to walk in newness of eternal life. Water Baptism in the lake, river or bathtub, if it has any value at all today, is just to picture that good news.
“For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens… if anyone is in Christ (died and resurrected), he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come….God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5)

“But someone will say, How are the dead raised?...It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So also it is written, the first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT…Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly…flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery…when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up IN VICTORY” (1 Corinthians 15:35-54).
Mankind will be created in the very “image of God” only when they are all Out-Called and made a part of the Ecclesia (Church).

From the cross Jesus prayed "Father forgive them” and uttered his final words “it is finished” and then Jesus dismissed his spirit, died and was laid in the tomb.
It was the bottom of the ninth with two outs in the game of life. The destiny of ALL mankind was at stake. Day one passed, strike one. Day two passed, strike two. The final pitch was made at sundown on Day three and then it happened….Jesus hit it out of the park, a walk off homer that sealed the Victory for mankind.
“Behold, I tell you a mystery…when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:51-57)

It is the Body of Christ, composed of all who, like Jesus, will be “called-out” of death, changed from flesh to spirit, and into abundant immortal life, just as Jesus who was the "first fruits."

Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love." (Galatians 5:1-6)
All of us are addicted to something. And those who have overcome an addiction to medication, drugs, or alcohol are some of my heroes. They would not realize or know, but what I saw in their struggle and victory has helped me with my own addiction. Are you ready for this? My addiction to church. I guess you could call me a recovering "churchaholic". I am not making light of addiction or trying to be funny.
Sometime after moving back to Sayre in 1977 I became addicted to church. I am not talking about my relationship with God or Jesus, my place in the Body of Christ, or my love for the Bible. I am talking about organized, programmed involvement in a local church. It was some 20 or 25 years later that I realized what had happened to me. By that time I was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher and a lay preacher. I taught Sunday night and Monday morning Bible studies, sang in the choir, and did part time preaching. And for five years I had served on the national board of trustees of the largest evangelical mission organization in the world.
I worked my normal job five days a week and then spent Saturday preparing for Sunday. On Sunday (at the height of my addiction), I would teach Sunday School, rush to a local church in the area to preach in their Sunday morning service, conduct a nursing home service Sunday afternoon, return to teach my church evening bible study group, and then rush again to a nearby church to preach their evening service. I would get up on Monday morning and lead another bible study, and I would return to church on Wednesday night for choir practice or whatever my church wanted me to do. Many times I used my vacation time at work to go to some church camp, retreat, or mission trip somewhere in the US or abroad. I will NOT be rewarded for that time - just forgiven.
I was high on this ritual. I felt good and fulfilled only when I was participating in these church related activities. I was hopelessly addicted!
And then my Father God intervened - lovingly, graciously, and mercifully. I was preparing for some activity at my computer. In the search engine, I typed the word "hell," and from that time forward God began the five year process of delivering me from my addiction to church and the false doctrine I had assumed was the truth.
He eventually set me free from religious ritual. Free to live life every day producing genuine fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, etc. And free to have a new and real appreciation for my loving and gracious heavenly Father, and for His Son Jesus, and their Word.
Most importantly, I now have time for my wife, my kids, and my grandkids. And golf. For the first time, I am sharing the true Gospel - the really good news of the GRACE of God! Not in temples made by hands. But on Facebook and a blog on the world wide web of all places. Manmade doctrines had kept me addicted to church programs and rituals. God knew that for me, the GOOD NEWS could only be found by first becoming addicted to the ritual found in the “law." It was necessary in order to find the JOY of "grace and truth." This good news is simple. It is really all you need to know and share.
God loves you.
He is not mad at you.
You are and will be saved.

Most importantly, I now have time for my wife, my kids, and my grandkids. And golf. For the first time, I am sharing the true Gospel - the really good news of the GRACE of God! Not in temples made by hands. But on Facebook and a blog on the world wide web of all places. Manmade doctrines had kept me addicted to church programs and rituals. God knew that for me, the GOOD NEWS could only be found by first becoming addicted to the ritual found in the “law." It was necessary in order to find the JOY of "grace and truth." This good news is simple. It is really all you need to know and share.
God loves you.
He is not mad at you.
You are and will be saved.

When God gave me the faith to believe that simple good news, He opened up the floodgates of the water of abundant life. And along the way I have discovered His wonderful and detailed plan, found only in the Bible. It details how God eventually wins the love and adoration of all His creation. And He becomes ALL in ALL, not just the few addicted to church.
